Peer Supporter in Training– OAR Foundation (Part Time Volunteer)
Job Description:
The Peer Supporter in Training at the OAR Foundation will assist in providing emotional and peer-based support to veterans coping with moral injury, PTSD, and other emotional challenges from their military service. This position is designed for individuals who are undergoing training to become certified Peer Support Specialists. Under the guidance of experienced peer support specialists, the Peer Supporter in Training will gain the necessary skills and knowledge to offer support to fellow veterans, help build a sense of community, and foster healing through shared experiences.
Key Responsibilities:

Assist in providing peer support to veterans through one-on-one conversations and group sessions, under the guidance of trained specialists.

Participate in training programs to learn about peer support techniques, moral injury, trauma recovery, and available mental health resources for veterans.

Observe and learn from experienced peers to gain insight into supporting veterans and creating a compassionate environment for healing.

Support veterans in developing coping strategies and finding purpose through service and community involvement.

Help create a welcoming environment for veterans to share their experiences, struggles, and successes in a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space.

Assist in facilitating peer support groups, offering a listening ear and encouraging group members to connect and support each other.

Share personal experiences where appropriate, to create a sense of camaraderie and mutual understanding.

Learn about mental health resources and assist in connecting veterans to the appropriate services or treatments they may need.

Maintain confidentiality and follow guidelines to ensure a respectful and supportive peer support environment.

Participate in ongoing training to build knowledge and improve skills in peer support and veteran care.
Requirements

Veteran status or strong connection to the military community (required).

High school diploma or equivalent (required); Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, or a related field (preferred).

Strong desire to help fellow veterans and contribute to their healing process.

Excellent listening and communication skills, with the ability to create a trusting and supportive relationship with others.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional and ethical standards.

Empathetic, compassionate, and patient demeanor, with an understanding of the emotional challenges veterans face.

Openness to learning, with a commitment to completing the required training to become a certified Peer Support Specialist.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Knowledge of veteran mental health issues, such as PTSD and moral injury (preferred, but not required).

Willingness to participate in training, supervision, and ongoing professional development to enhance peer support skills.
